Clothing Design and Sewing Workshops

Ideal for the non-experienced sewer wanting to learn proper sewing techniques from the start -- and the experienced sewer who wants to modify commercial patterns with confidence, to design own garments from a brown basic pattern, and to learn custom sewing techniques.

In the experienced-sewer workshop, the student will study:

  • techniques for modifying commercial patterns with confidence; techniques for custom designing and constructing original patterns from a brown basic pattern that will really fit and flatter her figure; ways to handle alterations, remodeling, and fitting problems; specialized hand sewing techniques; and self-fabric and other decorating ideas.

Class time is devoted to lecture, demonstration, and individual fittings. Actual sewing by advanced students will be done at home.

In the beginner sewing workshop, the student will learn the following skills by first constructing fun and useful (non-garment) projects, then can progress to the garment course:

  • the sewing machine (operation and maintenance); patterns (how to read and use); fabrics (how to select and handle); pressing vs. ironing; and techniques for doing appliqués, gathers, tucks, pleating, cording, zippers, buttonholes and other closures, hems, and some hand sewing.

Class time is devoted to lecture, demonstration, and guided student practice.

Tools & Supplies:

Advanced students to provide own supplies. Beginners to provide some supplies (explained in 1st class). Sewing machines are available for practice in the classroom. Students may bring their own machines if they prefer.
